Japan's organic food certification system is the Japan Agricultural Standard (JAS). Established by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries over two decades ago, JAS is a rigorous certification system required to legally label agricultural products and processed foods as "organic" in Japan.

While My Vibrant Leaf itself does not hold the organic certificate, the farms we directly source our matcha from strictly adhere to this exacting process. The Three Major Standards for JAS Organic Certification

No chemical fertilizers or pesticides: Crops must be grown on farmland that has been completely free of chemical fertilizers and synthetic pesticides for at least three years.

Non-GMO seeds: Absolutely no genetically modified crops or seeds are permitted.

Environmental conservation: Sustainable farming methods must be utilized to conserve local ecosystems and maintain long-term soil health.
Meeting these standards requires immense time, effort, and dedication from farmers. The JAS organic certification system evaluates not just the final agricultural product, but the entire lifecycle involved in producing it. To earn this certification, our partner farms must keep meticulous daily "production process management records," detailing everything from cultivation to shipping. Inspectors from a registered certification body thoroughly review these documents and conduct rigorous on-site field inspections to verify full compliance with JAS organic standards. Even after the initial certification is awarded, these partner farms undergo regular audits and renewal procedures to ensure the matcha we source for My Vibrant Leaf continuously meets the highest organic standards year after year.
